What is NEBOSH IG2? – Risk Assessment

The major aim of the IG2 unit is to apply the practical knowledge and understanding for the learners they have learned from their studies and it mainly covers the topics on technical data of specific hazards or hazard categories such as machinery noise, chemical and fire hazards, etc…
Before the start of the IG2 risk assessment, candidates must have to study the whole IG syllabus (elements 1 to 11).
The IG2 unit has seven elements such as,
- Element 5: Physical and psychological health
- Element 6: Musculoskeletal health
- Element 7: Chemical and biological agents
- Element 8: General workplace issues
- Element 9: Work equipment
- Element 10: Fire
- Element 11: Electricity
The unit IG2 is assessed by the practical based examination and candidates have to submit a report on risk assessment of workplace based on the identified hazard (from elements 5-11) that has to meet the best practice standards (‘proper and adequate’).
Students have to visit a workplace to ensure the implementation of health & safety management system and they should notice all the hazard factors, control measures, welfare facilities, emergency rescue systems, worker’s accessibility, etc…
To complete the IG2 risk assessment students need to follow the four stages which are,
I. Description of the organization and methodology used
This should include the following information such as the organization’s name, location and the total space occupied by the organization, number of workers, core activities of the organization like,
- Products or services provided by the company
- Shift pattern of work based on the activities undertaken in the organizations
II. Risk Assessment
In this stage, the risk assessment must include ten types of workplace hazard factors and that should be taken from the five different categories of hazards. The risk assessment details need to be explained by topics like,

III. Priorities & Actions with Justifications
After completing the risk assessment, students should allocate actions/control measures for the 3 much need or highest hazards that need immediate attention and it can be either associated with the same or different hazard categories.
IV. Review, Communicate & Check
This stage is about an overview of the previous stages and ensures that everything is perfectly recorded. The IG2 report should be submitted before 2 days of the scheduled IG2 examination date.
